Glasgow Cathedral
Glasgow Cathedral, also known as St Mungo's Cathedral and the High Kirk of Glasgow is a Church of Scotland place of worship located beside the Glasgow Royal Infirmary east of Cathedral Street. The history of this cathedral is inextricably linked with the history of Glasgow itself and its crypt is the final resting place of the patron saint of the city, Saint Mungo.
Glasgow Cathedral dates back to the late 12th century and predates the reformation, making it a rare example of a medieval church in Scotland and a fine example of Gothic architecture. The cathedral was the scene of both battles and peace treaties over the centuries and it retains the title of cathedral even though it has not been the seat of a bishop since 1690. It was originally home to the University of Glasgow when it was founded in the 1450s, but the university rapidly relocated to a nearby site.
The cathedral has a professional choir and a four-manual organ that was installed in 1879. The department of music plays an important role in the life of the church and there are regular concerts and other events held in the cathedral.
Highlights of any visit to Glasgow Cathedral include the crypt, the 'pulpitum' or stone screen that separates the choir from the nave, the Blackadder aisle ceiling in carved stone and the likeness of Bishop Wishart, a friend to Wallace and Bruce who fought for Scotland against the English in the 14th century.
