Glasgow School of Art
The beautiful and historic building that houses the Glasgow School of Art is considered by many to be the crowning glory of one of Glasgow's most famous sons, the architect and designer Charles Rennie Mackintosh. It was built between 1897 and 1909, and although the art nouveau library was destroyed by fire in 2014, the rest of the building remains intact and all of the school's archives were salvaged.
The School of Art has its roots in the Glasgow Government School of Design, which was founded in 1845. Today the Glasgow School of Art is the only self-governing publically funded school of art in Scotland. It offers a variety of undergraduate and post-graduate courses, along with a number of short courses throughout the year. Broadly speaking, the School is divided into three main areas of learning: the Mackintosh School of Architecture, the School of Design and the School of Fine Art. There is also a Graduate School and a Digital Design Studio that specialises in 3D visualisation.
The Glasgow School of Art is housed in two separate locations in the centre of Glasgow. The area around the Mackintosh building is home to the School of Fine Art and Digital Culture, while the School of Design and its various disciplines are housed in the Garnethill Campus, near Charing Cross station.
The Glasgow School of Art welcomes many visitors and prospective students all through the year.
