Glasgow Universities

Scotland boasts a total of fifteen universities and Glasgow, the largest and liveliest city in the country, is home to three of them: the University of Glasgow, the University of Strathclyde, and the Caledonian University.

There is a long history of higher education in Scotland, ever since the first university was founded at St Andrew's in 1418. Secondary school education in Scotland has always preferred broad knowledge of a wide range of subjects over the English, Welsh and Northern Irish systems which typically prefer in-depth knowledge of a smaller selection of subjects. In consequence, university courses tend to be four years on average, rather than 3 in their UK equivalents.

All universities in Scotland may confer degrees at every level from undergraduate to doctorate and they are all public bodies, controlled and funded by the Scottish government. There are an estimated 230,000 students throughout Scotland enrolled at university. Many students are attracted to Glasgow for its high standard of education, its lively music and entertainment scene and the wide-range of culture on offer.

If you are visiting or conducting research at Glasgow universities, or simply attending a graduation ceremony, you will find that the Sandyford Lodge on Royal Crescent is the perfect base. From our 19-bedroom hotel, the University of Glasgow is just on the other side of Kelvingrove Park, a pleasant walk that takes between 10 and 15 minutes. The University of Strathclyde is a short bus ride to the east, as is the Caledonian University. This peaceful hotel was recently refurbished to high standards and all of the ensuite bedrooms offer direct-dial telephones, free Wi-Fi access and flat screen televisions with a selection of 90 digital radio and TV stations.

The prices on offer at the Sandyford Lodge include a choice between a cooked Scottish breakfast and a continental breakfast, served every morning in the dining room. There is a member of staff on reception 24 hours a day for your comfort and convenience.
